Wonderland Community Art Experience!

Dear Friends and Colleagues,

As participating artist and Project Director for Wonderland (curated by Lance Fung), it is my pleasure to inform you of our approaching opening date.  Wonderland opens to the San Francisco public on October 17th, from 11am - 5pm at Boeddeker Park in the Tenderloin.  If you are in the area please stop by!  If you can't make it please check us out online at www.wonderlandshow.org

For those of you who know, myself and a large number of artists, approximately 60 and growing, have been working on Wonderland for over a year now.  The show consists of 16 collaborative projects that are each rich with content and community collaboration.

Thank you for your continued support!

yours,

John K Melvin

An excerpt from the press release is below:

"
Out of Volunteerism, 16 public
works of art emerge from the
San FranciscoĆ¢€™s Tenderloin
neighborhood.

San Francisco - The art exhibition
Wonderland takes place in the
Tenderloin neighborhood of San
Francisco from October 17-November 15
2009. The exhibition encompasses 16
site-inspired projects set throughout the
Tenderloin created by 53 artists from
San Francisco and beyond.

New York based curator Lance Fung
created Wonderland to continue his
exploration of collaboration, community
and social exchange through the process
of making contemporary art. Artists in
Wonderland worked over the year with
the Tenderloin community including
nonprofits, religious organizations,
schools, local arts associations and the
public to develop their works of art. The
themes in the artwork embody the full
diversity that the Tenderloin offers and include giving a voice to children
       shuttered by the environment, human
trafficking, theater, homelessness, immigrant communities, local history and embracing
the beauty of historic architecture.

a delicious experience

My belly is full of delicious Mongolian food, prepared by our Chinese artist Shi Qing and his chosen chef from Mongolia, Chao Ketu. Art and food are two of my very favorite things, particularly when shared with family and friends. I feel extremely LUCKY to get to know such amazing people during the installation of this Biennial, and am glad I didn't spill sauce on myself tonight.

Opening this weekend

Hi all,
Thanks Barry for suggesting we show our work to one another. I'm part of the documentary website team, and- as the cobbler's daughter has no shoes, I'm still working on my own website!
Kara Pajewski (another web team member) and I have a virtual graffiti interactive in a group show at the Santa Fe Complex opening on Saturday, June 14 from 4-8 pm. The Santa Fe Complex is within two blocks of SITE at 632 Agua Fria. Hope to see people there.

because sharing is caring

Great idea Barry, and great website! Also, we will have a "show and tell" night on Thursday (around 7:30 or 8:00) at SITE... we'll set up a laptop and projector so whoever is interested can show their websites, digital images, DVDs, etc. We have a slide projector too for those of you who have slides of your work.

Some random meeting pics

Let's share each other's art!

Hey Everyone-

Since I think we're all artists, we should share our work with each other.
Let's compile website addresses, flickr.com accounts, and/or post and image or two of each other's work on the blog.

I'll start - my website is www.barrybeach.com

Since I've shown you mine, now you have to show me yours!

art!

As more and more artists arrive, the installation process is really getting exciting! I love meeting the artists and seeing their work evolve and take form. I'd love to hear from some of you about your experiences working with the artists, and with one another... anyone willing to share?
